New to Birmingham's thriving art market, BlowCreates is an independent pop-up gallery.

Based in Zellig; the newest addition to The Custard Factory, BlowCreates will bring a new, exciting and innovative arts venue to Birmingham, selling work by painters, photographers, illustrators, sculptors, designers and more, many of whom are current students or graduates from Arts Universities.

The spiffing Sam and Kay from Get a Grip asked four illustrators including little old me to create an A6 crimbo card for the first Get a Grip Christmas card pack, all Printed on 100% recycled paper stock using water based inks. They will come with 4 upcycled envelopes by d!rektrecycling made from maps.

You can pre-order the cards HERE for £5 including postage within the UK. Alternatively, you can wait until they are printed, and buy them directly from the studio at The Custard Factory (Birmingham) in a few weeks time (provided they haven’t already sold out).

The pack also includes work by Darren John (top left), Lee Nutland(bottom left), and Thomas Lacey(bottom right)
There will only be a limited number of cards printed, and will be available and posted out as soon as they are printed in the first week of December (if not sooner).

With an evening turn around to design a t-shirt for the band "Tellison" I drafted up a short story based on a suited fellow called Colin who wonders the foggy hills of Slowmarket searching for bones to add to his collection.

On this trip he finds a collarbone, which is also the name of Tellison's new 7"

I met a lovely old chuggar called Reg the other day that was collecting money for war heroes, he was suited and booted with his war medals on show but above his awards for bravery was a small button badge of a peace symbol placed perfectly on his lapel for everyone to see.

I couldn’t get this image out of my head for days and wanted to try and use it some how in one of my briefs but couldn’t find a way, so instead he’s another page of my sketchbook that I wanted to share.

a man that went to war for his country and is proud of that but in reflection he wish he didn’t have to fight in the first place.

Kiss Chase For Play

The past few weeks I've been back and forth to London to take part in the AWESOME Play Exhibition organised by inkygoodness at the East gallery in Brick Lane.
For the show I put together a wee story based on a game of Kiss Chase, where the lovely wheel chair bound Vera is being happily persude for a snog by a loved up Cuthbert.

Kiss Chase is a set of sequential drawings, screen prints,and plush toys, that depict the story and shows the selection of processes I use to create work.

EUROPEAN PANDA : PRESS AND PROJECTS

A lovely chap called Chris Nunn and I are working on a project under the name European Panda Press. we are starting a Zine press and blog specialising in black and white illustration, graphic design, and art, and was planning on running an ongoing project on the EP website(COMING SOON), where people design and create a European Panda in any medium as long as its black and white.
This submission project will not be printed or sold in anyway it will just be a flickr group that is shown on the blog(when created) so people can get to know about our projects and zines, and as always the art work is copyrighted to the artist, with links to their sites etc.

last weekend I was invited to the Lockside Lounge in Camden to do a bit of live drawing along side some brillinat illustrators and painters. The event was organised by the spiffing chaps at the Kitch-en gallery and sponsored by Posca.

Back in June I was invited by a nice chap that draws, spins and make's a super fry up, called Dave Bain to attend an illustration event at the world famous Upfest in Brizzle.

It was an awesome day.
I got to meet some great illustrators, creators, and most importantly a few of the BWD boys (Dave, Steve, and Neil).

I doodled some Edwardian twitchers, drank cider, and sweated quite a lot.

A big thanks to the Inkygoodness painting team for the lovely twitpic of me melting.

I also meet a DOOOOOD called Seb Burnett whos characters are wonderfully funny, I got the below print for freds room.

The lovely folks at I Make Fun Stuff and LoveOne have put together a street fair in ipswich which will be full of hand made nicities, vintage fashion, and yours truly painting a couple of canvases.

In the whole craft fair spirit and to fit into the bracket of "Affordable Art" I will be holding a raffle to find my curly pair a new home. like the raffles you used to have at Junior School when you would win cake or someones unwanted Crimbo pressie(a 6 year old with bath salts is not a happy bunny).

I will be based outside LoveOne with pen in hand and will be selling tickets at a £1 each as well as a range of prints, badges, and tshirts.

Sorry for the lack of blogging recently Ive been drawing my moldy socks off and doing my fatherly duties in the Millerchip household.
Over the past month Ive been painting a make shift mural in ipswich with a old graff master called Aroma (photos to follow), ive also been working up some designs for a small narrative display For the lovely ladies at Inkygoodness called "Kiss chase" for their next london exhibition called "PLAY" which is full of amazing illustrators, painters, and creators.

Another exhibition im involved in is the mighty DRAWGASMIC exbo in St.louis where they have asked over 500 artist to send in a 11" x 8.5" drawing for a mammoth grid of imagery, my doodle was a picture of bearded man chilling with a few animal pals strumming a base.....I need to get out more.
Last but not least im still working away on my two tone childrens book which is about an epic story of a man that craves something we all take for granted!

Also proberly the most important thing that’s happened over the past month or so, my son freddie has turned one and has also drawn his first doodle.

A Beautiful Machine

My idea for this project was that the Bicycle is designed to be a extension of a cyclist and that the cyclist is in fact the engine that powers the bike. so I wanted to work with the idea that the beautiful machine was the human engine and the Bike its self is an ergonmic extension of a cyclist, so simpliy I flipped the rider and the bike materials, so the human being made out of metal and mechanical parts and the bike being made out of human limbs.

One of the newest members of The boys who draw collective Julian James was kind Enough to ask me to collaborate with 26 artists to create a alphabet poster for a project for Children In Need called ALPHABITS.
Each artist creates a letter of the alphabet which will go together to make a large poster.

I wanted the letter "F" but some other creative chappy got there first….dang nab it!!!!
So after a long discussion with Jules we picked the letter "Z" and so Zeb Zeb the Zulu zoologist was born.

The New English: Tectonic Plates project

The New English: Tectonic Plates project is based on a small selection of briefs to create some Illustrated plates for a exhibition and book run by Paul Bishop from a company called The New English.
The brief I chose was "Hello" the art of introduction.
The image is based on a real life brief incounter between a drummer who was on a lunch break and a random dog that stormed in to the the rehearsal room who mounted his leg and started to beg for a bit of his cheese and meatball Subway. Rich the drummers first word suprisingly wasn’t “what the fu….” But it was simply "Hello....".

Its quite funny how some briefs you work on for ages coming up with a Good Idea and other times the ideas find you, so a big thanks to Rich and Tinkerbell for their help on this one.

For those of you who dont know as well as dooderling im also one of the founders of Lielow and Sketch, a lil co-operative that puts on visual events from exhibitions to live drawing nights based in ipswich.

Kicking off October with a bark is the wonderful world of Animal House!

We are absolutely ecstatic to be able to bring to ipswich a collection of some of the most amazing artists and Illustrators producing work today.

A Lovely lady Called Deborah from www.craftguerrilla.com asked me to produce a illustration for a special edition zine based on tea for their Craftea party,
to celebrate two great British institutes...Craft and Tea!

They will be hosting their tea party in the Vestry House Museum,London and visitors will be able to relax and make some CRAFT while enjoying a cup of tea and a slice of cake mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

To coincide with the event, their tri-monthly Craft-Zine will be on sale during the whole of trail in the E17 Art Trail pop up book shop and in several retail outlets in the area.

The 60+ Years project aims to creatively commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: the first global expression of rights to which all human beings are inherently entitled.

Designers have been invited to take part by writing or drawing on a mini protest board to exercise their right to free speech and self-expression. The boards have been posted to both established and upcoming designers, to be filled out and sent back to Zara as soon as possible.

I have started my voyage of discovery into ink and colour last night, I started by coming up with a few bird based character designs by taking visual reference from some old copies of RSPB Magazine that was horded away with the rest of my extensive reference library, well actually its a shoe box of scrap mag’s and leaflets hidden away in loft.
I came up with a few animal hybrid and decided to produce some work based on a lovely critter called a Curly Squark based on baby Sparrow Hawk and a dodo whos feathers clump together to make lumps. I have decided not to put the rough sketches online but in stead I will be adding a few photos of my first Curly Squark painting, layer by layer, step by step.

I was rummaging around my Ma & Pa's house in Brumsdale the other week and found a load of my old college work, so I decided drag it all out of the spare room to have a look through.
So after setterling down with a nice cup of Rosie, I began to flick through and reminisce at the frolics of youth and fine art projects that me and the other cronies( note to self, I should use the word "cronies" more) at City College took part in. Whilst doing this I realise there was a lot of techniques that I have forgot due to concentrating on character design and line quality,
dare i say it, i think im getting a bit stagnant with my doodles:(.
so the big question is;

What am i gonna do about it?

Luckily next to my college portfolio was my old faithful blue fishing box(aka Eric) full of inks, paints, and other half used niceties.
So I plan to experiment with inks, paints, Poscas, and something else I turned my back a while ago..........COLOUR!!!

My plan is to produce some colourful mix media piece for a exhibition in October Called "Animal house", so with some inspiration from the colourful Heroes below, several dozen cups of tea, Dog House by SeaSick Steve On Repeat, and a few bisquits(this is a must) I should hopefully be bringing a lil twist to my Two Tone, curly haired characters.

For the 3 exhibition I have created three “one-off” screen-prints based on feelings, emotions, and events that took place over three days By using symbols, characters, hand rendred type, and interlinking shapes.

10 selected artists are each producing three pieces of work based on any theme and in any medium to create a viewing experience second to none!! The theme of the exhibition has been kept as loose as possible to enable each artist to create work showcasing their unique styles and practices. Every term we publish a 64 page A6 booklet with some of the best comment, criticism and art in Cambridge. here is my little pot doodle called lost and found which will be in the next issue, it may also have a wee poem to go with it.

I revisted the dark depths of my Itunes this week to find some inspiration for the” Create for Cross” Exbo and rediscovered a musical gem.
Holland’s own GOLDEN EARRING with RADAR LOVE!!

As well as making me want to wear tight clothes and shake a tamberine like im licking a dinner plate, it also helped me to produce the below peice.

This is a 30cmx30cm hand drawn using posca paint pens(its was my first time using such pens, me like:)) this peice is going to be in a secret auction, where the people who want to buy the work write down their contact details and the amount they want to pay, the winning bid recives the work and all the money is donated to the Red Cross.

I will also be doing some live drawing at the opening event 3rd may from 4 untill 9pm.

Create For Cross Exhibition

Cambridge based illustrator Sam Peet and his girlfriend are organising an exhibition for the Red Cross called Create For Cross,they have asked a selection of students, graduates and established artists, including myself, to exhibit by submitting a piece of work.The work will then be subject to a secret auction, with all the money going to the Red Cross.

Sam has also asked me if i would be doing some live drawing on the night................watch this space, more info soon.

The image above is a 4-way music based illustration collaboration between Matt Farrar, Lucy selina hall, Tom Juby, and myself, Based on lyrics of songs featured in IP1 issue 29. I was given lyrics to "Take me home" by Ed Sheeran.

Each illustrator produced their illustration individually which was then put together by Toms Ninja Photoshop skills.

Back in the game and life changing events

The past 15 week or so have been a little bit busy compared to the norm.
As well as trying to create my website(www.mistermillerchip.com coming soon), Christian Nunn and my good self, well more Christian with a little help from me, have created Lielow and Sketch, Lielow and Sketch are a non-profit artists collective, with the aim to produce exhibitions, zines, live painting nights and much much more, with a little help from Ipswich town council and IP1 we are putting on our first show in June called "3", we have some great exhibitors including Steve Rack, Simon Wild, Gemma Correll, plus many more.

Christian and I were also asked back by the King st Swap Meet Boys to do some Live Doodles why they spun some hip-hop delights (photos attached).
Another big thanks to Andy, Lee and to all the people that gave us doodle love on the night.

I have also been teaching some illustration briefs at West Suffolk College, this was a great opportunity; I got to meet some really cool people and some of the Suffolk’s future creative talent.
Mark my words peeps, Suffolk is a hot bed of young creative talent :).

This is very exciting times for me but the above isn’t the life changing bit............ on the 18th march 2009 at 23.09 my beautiful wife gave birth to my son Freddie Millerchip........................Mister Millerchip & Son, it’s got a ring to it :).

Chris Nunn and I was asked to do some live drawing at a night in Ipswich called The King St Swap Meet, and I have to say it was great fun to do, we meet some lovely ladies and spiffing gents that made us feel like it was our local drinking spot.
The resident DJ'S, DJ Fingerprint and The Coca-Cola kid Spun some funked up tracks from yester year to set the mood whilst Chris(blak inc) and I brushed down some sweet smelling markers and started to doodle and the rest is history.

a big thank you to all the staff at the swan that helped us on the night and even bigger thankyou to andy and lee for letting us partake in such a fine night of what the cool kids call HipHop!

As me and my lovely wife (Misses Millerchip) are expecting the pitter patter of tiny feet in march , we, as all parents to be, have been trying to find a spiffing name for lil chip.

when looking we stumbeld across the name Crispin which means "one with curly hair" as Misses Millerchip shouts "Hell no", I start to doodle.......... all this happened about three months ago I now have 42 doodles based on curly haired characters, which I might make in to a zine.

the t shirt idea has been done many times before, but I could not help my self......sorry:)!!

busy times!!

Life has been very hectic with illustration projects and the forth coming arrival of Lil Chip in March the pass few months has been a blur for the lovely Louise(aka Misses Millerchip)and I.

As well as nursery duties I have recently sent some art work to “Laser Artzine” (Belgium) and for the next” GoodvsEvil zine,” which I should hopefully here back from in the next few weeks. Both of theses zine’s are jam packed with amazing illustration from a fine list of contributors, check out the web sites via my link section.
GoodvsEvils next issue will have a free shin tanaka spikey baby toy.

Ive also sent a late contribution to The Cardboardshelter.org Project.
Even though I don’t know if my work has been selected for the project I think its a great cause and a Genius project.

Here’s some information about the project (all the below text is taken from the website http://www.cardboardshelter.org)

Cardboardshelter.org aims to raise both awareness of, and funds for The Big Issue Foundation by bringing together artists from around the UK to contribute towards the first CardboardShelter.org exhibition.

We have invited 30 artists to each produce a piece of work on an A4-sized piece of cardboard. The idea of the cardboard canvas is a nod towards the material which provides shelter to many homeless. The collection will then be displayed in an exhibition and pieces will be available for purchase at £40 each. Therefore, if every item were to be sold, over £1,000 would be raised for The Big Issue!

The exhibition will be at The Art Works Gallery in Newcastle upon Tyne, on Thursday 27 November 2008 from 6pm to 10pm, in the run up to Christmas: one of the most difficult times of the year for homeless people.

History

The original idea of a cardboard canvas to raise funds for homeless charities was thought up by Steve Tenebrini, Jeremy Boyd and Mike Maher when they created a show called "This Side Up". The idea was then adapted by Greg Eastmer at Gimme Shelter making it exclusive to street artists.

If you can get to the exhibition, go and spend some of your hard earned cash on some amazing art!!!

Stage one of the switch project is nearley complete, so that means there will be lots of awesome prints(by members of a so far unamed collective)for sale to raise funds for the journal. the prints are based on the theme nocturnal.

I will have four designs for sale all Limited Edition short run Litho prints printed on 200gsm Woodfree Matt Stock 20 of each design.
